Guys - I have the amber engine light on and the reader says code 0401 - which says something about "exhaust recirculation" in the book....any ideas and what do I do? Thanks, Mike
2004 - 96k miles. Have had zero issues so far. As per Ken's recommendation was reading some of the threads under 6.0. Sounds like people unhook it, eliminate it, etc. Is it safe to drive?
I have an extended warranty on this too - of course I am sure I will find like everthing else this is a "non covered" item...
You can unhook it but that wont solve the code problem . Also, the boost levels and/or exhaust pressure can still force it open. Mine went bad and I removed it. The turbo spools quicker and the EGT's run at least 100 degrees cooler.
A lot of people block them off too with a piece of sheet metal or spot weld them shut. Do that and unplug it and you wont get a check engine light but you will probably get the performance code.
Thanks for the info - is this a good one to get? Just what I wanted to do, dump another $600 in this truck that is seldom driven. Oh well. What's it take to install, a PITA or just have my mechanic do it? Thanks again, Mike
When driving it - despite the engine light being on, it sounds like a "hissing," like the fan is running or something - just as I accelerate for a second or two, then it stops. What is that?
This is a good kit. As for the install, I don't know. Call Derick at outlawdiesel.net and pick his brain about the kit and the install, really knows his stuff. I had the mechanic do mine when he did the headstuds, so the engine was out of the truck. The hissing maybe the EGR valve - which is probably your problem.
Scott - thanks for help and input. Did talk to Derek and he's going to talk about some of the mods available tomorrow with my mechanic. He of course is pushing the EGR delete as well as some other stuff, doing a CAT delete, CAT back exhaust, etc. He wasn't too thrilled that I had the K&N filter on there....says they "let in" too much (not sure if I agree with that). I am going to talk to Beans Diesel guys in TN tomorrow too.
For now, my mechanic pulled the EGR today and it was all gunked up. He soaked and cleaned it out as well as used some micro vacuum thing attached to his airline to suck out all the soot that had fallen in. Replaced it, cleared code and all seems good. As far as the "hissing," we found that the top blue hose on the turbo intake had a tear in it (thank you Ford for charging repair shop price of $82 for this 6" of blue rubber) but it solved the problem. The hissing I was hearing on acceleration appears to have been coming from the hose itself sucking air right behind the firewall instead of from the tube and grill.
I have to figure out what to do with the CAT, exhaust etc by having these guys talk to my mechanic. Truck is registered in NJ and I have to be sure I can pass emissions during inspections on a go-forward basis. I've talked to a few guys who haven't and have had to yank out mods and re-install OEM stuff - some say they "do it for fun" before inspection time every couple of years, I can think of a lot more "fun" things to do.
I'm in the process of researching prior to purchase. I've found a 2004 with only 38k mile and what I'd consider a normal OASIS report - no significant repairs. If the EGR delete kit is installed do you still get a performance code? Also - what happens to the EGR cooler - is that still present and a potential problem source or does/can it be bypassed? It looks like at least one of these kits has a bypass - just want to see what is the best option.
