Accidently lucky

-Sorry but its along thread to give all the details-
I've been building what weve determined to be a 94.5 PSD engine lately and had numerous repairs doen to it. Fuel leaks at the pump and then found it leaking through the WIF sensor. The FPR screen was insanely dirty I was amazed it was running at all. After find and working through these things it kept getting better but still not right. As it started I fixed the fuel leaks at the pump, and checked fuel pressure 50psi so I shimmed it, 80psi ok but still off I find it leaking through the WIF sensor so I was gonna get anew one in the mean time I checked the FPR screen and found a an 1/8" of crap in it and cleaned it, dramatic improvement. Still off though, including some turbo flutter. Took the shim back out to slow down the fuel leak in the sensor. Started acting sluggish again put the shim back in, ran better tested the fuel pressure again 30psi decided the guage had to be having problems Ita was a tire guage and the same one Id been using thought the diesel may have killed it. Decided to rebuild the FPR and the replace the sonsor at the same time, found a complete filter housing w/ FPR for $25 at a scrap yard. Started taking apart the new one from the scrap yard and the one from the truck in the lower filter housing of the FPR I found tons of rubber flakes in the srcap piece and a chunk of what appeared to be steel cable shroud like youd have on the throttle cable of a lawn mower about 1/8" tall and mashed flat, in the engine I was working on. This concerned me and went looking for the source, didnt find it. After assembling the best pieces of the two units to make one, I decided to check the FPR springs to see which looked better in lenth and compresion. The one out of the engine I was working on was 1/4" shorter than the scrap unit. It aparrently broke and rubbed the nd down smooth enough to look original and the broken piece ended up in the filter. With the shim in it, it was still about 1/8"-3/32" shorter than the scrap unit. So when It put it back together with the good spring It just up in power and response to what Id expect of this engine, and changed to a non leaking sensor, havent checked the pressure yet. Now Im debateing wether or not the shim could have caused the problem, and should I shim the new spring. Id never heard or these springs breaking off and still working even if badly. Any thoughts or opinions?

When putting the FPR back together, there is a "Tit" on the inside of the brass plug that keeps the spring centered and the spring pressure regulated for lack of better words. If the spring is allowed to be "Cocked" to one side it will crush a couple of coils and cause all kinds of havoc.

I have never had a piece of the spring actually break off but it's not unreasonable to assume that it could happen. My best guess at this point is that is what happened at some point, probably before you obtained this PSD.
