Need some guidance

Hey guys, I just got a slightly used 08' f-350 diesel with 27K on the ticker. I bought the truck from a local reputable dealer, and I am curious what sort of matinence is coming due that I should make sure gets done. It looks by the sticker in the window that i have till 32K until oil change. BTW is it true that 10K is the oil interval for light duty use? Much obliged for any input. I am a formal 6.0 guy so hopefully some things have translated over to the 6.4.

Thanks

I'd make sure fuel filters have been done by now too. Oil change is 10,000km for light use but I don't think anyone goes by that. I haven't towed anything with mine thus far and I still change mine every 5-7,000km. Some guys are brave and go longer but it's cheap peace of mind for me. I also think you are getting close to needing a tranny flush but don't have my book on me to confirm that. I'm sure someone else will update this and might know better. Good Luck

Fuel filters, water separator, air filter should be confirmed as being paid attention to.

I tow almost every day and my dealer and I have taken the 5,000 mile oil change interval. We are both comfortable with that. I think 10,000 miles is pushing it for any type of use but if you go to Ford the oil change is around $120. Personal choice.

Make sure all recalls have been done. This is critical for whatever warranty you have left (the 36,000 mile one). If your radiator starts leaking before 36,000 miles it will be covered. After that it becomes a Ford Hotline issue and recall service combined with the temperament of your dealer service dept. will decide if and how much you will have to pay for a new one.

I have 87,000 miles on my 6.4, most of which is towing a trailer of some sort. I always have the diesel tech check my trans fluid for color/smell and have yet to have needed a flush or service on it. I'm sure it is coming eventually. Just check your fluid for signs of burn.

General note, lots of us think using a cetane additive in your ULSD fuel is a good idea.

More of my opinions:
You may experience a "stuttering" of the motor under high load and high humidity conditions. Could be a de-fueling or too much moisture in the turbo, not really sure. You may experience regeneration cycles at seemingly random intervals. We all search for consistency, predictability, and it just does not happen that way. Plenty of posts/threads here if you have not read them yet. If you have black soot on your tailpipe tips then you are likely to have a problem, get it resolved right away if you can. Everything about this motor is high temperature. Make sure you use the right engine oil and keep an eye on your coolant.

Have fun and I hope you like your new truck. Most of us really enjoy ours.

Great post, but I have to comment on this one.

You are following the exact Ford recommended interval for your use, as the maintenance schedule dictates that if you tow, every 5,000 is necessary.

Now, that being said, this thing takes nearly 4 gallons of oil, and is supposed to go 10,000 miles between oil changes for regular usage.

Now as a comparison, my work truck is NOT a Ford PSD, rather a Kenworth with a 15-liter Caterpillar engine. It takes 9 gallons of oil, and only sees an oil change every 40,000 miles. It now has 497,858 miles on it, and has never been rebuilt.

I don't see what's so wrong with 10,000 mile change intervals when the folks who engineered the engine tell you so....

There is a couple things I would do. First ask your dealer for an Oasis Report, they are free. This will tell you what has Ford repaired or replaced on the truck.
The second thing I would do is change oil and filter, definately change fuel filters both (2) and maybe change transmission fluid. Now you will have a baseline for known maintenance.
