I have a 1968 f-600 with a 330MD. It threw two rods, before that it was running nicely. I know a guy who has a 391 he would sell me for $500. Looking for opinions and would also like to find a horsepower / torque chart on these older ford engines.
There's no replacement for displacement. The Ft I believe was offered in the 600-700's anyway(correct me if I'm wrong) so you should be able to install without problems? I'm not sure what the numbers are on the FT motors, but I imagine the 391 isnt too far from a 390. And it's definitely better than the 330MD.
In the mid 300s, net. These were lo-po motors and did not make as much torque as car or PU engines. However, they made it a low revs, and they have huge flywheels to get the big trucks moving. So even though the 391 will be heaven on earth compared to the 330, it will not overpower the rest of the drivetrain.
I believe the 330MD used an FE-style crank, so if your current 330 has the motor-mount timing cover (and it should I think) and the 391 doesn't, you can NOT use the 330 timing cover, the seal hole will be different.
I would also be careful with the flywheel and clutch arrangement.
Be careful with exhaust manifolds too. They "should" be the same, but not 100% sure on that one neither.
My brother had a '68 F600 with the 330, and he would get about 90K miles out of a rebuild before it was just totally spent. Overworked. In other words, the 391 will definitely be an upgrade in power.
