1997 4.6 Low Temp?

My 1997 V-8 4.6 acted weird this morning. The coolant light came on, the temp gauge dropped to zero but there were no codes. The engine made a ticking sound that I assume was the fail safe overheating mode. There was coolant in the resevoir. What made no sense was the zero reading on the temperature gauge. Does anyone know if a faulty water temperature sensor could cause the engine to go into fail safe mode?

That is what it was. I just finished the job. I thought the zero coolant temp on the gauge was strange. Thanks and this is the end of this thread.
