1998 F-150 problems
It started one day when I was backing out of my driveway for work one day. When the transmission engaged I heard a loud clunk. Didnt think a lot of it so I went ahead and backed out and started down the road. Anything over 5mph and there was all kinds of grinding noise and the truck was shaking like something was binding up. I was just going to take it somewhere to get it fixed but lack of money and fear of getting my *** handed to me I decided to just try to fix it myself.
First thing I did was get under the truck and try to move the driveshaft, it seems like the joints are solid as it doesnt move with the truck in gear, well it moves just a hair maybe .020 or less which I figure it should move a tad, and the moving appears to be in the axle rather than the joints of the driveshaft.
So I got the axle on jackstands and put it in neutral and tried turning the wheels. It all moves but I'm having to put some major force behind it to get it to. And sometimes it will lock up and I cant keep turning it the same way, I have to go back the other way as something is binding up.
Also I noticed another thing. Lets say when I turn the right tire clockwise, shouldnt the left tire turn counterclockwise? I know that sounds funny but its always confused me why it does that but I think that is the way it should go? Well when I turn the right tire the left tire goes in the same direction.
I need some pointers and ideas on things I can do to pinpoint what it is without tearing the whole rear end apart just to find out its not even the diferential.
One other bit of maybe useful information. I dont treat the truck bad, but on wet pavement when a tire breaks loose there is terrible axle hop. Bad enough that you would have to completely let off the gas to keep it from doing this as it would probably snap something if you kept on it. This was before something broke.
Sounds like the spider gears in the rear end are toast.
You are going to need to take a look inside.

PS. Drum brakes are a pain
