My F100 has its original FE 352 and it has not gone through a rebuild. Before I bought it I had a compression check done and all cylinders looked good. I drive it almost daily without problems, but twice I've started it and heard a loud ticking sound that speeds up with the RPM, but it then suddenly stopped within a few minutes. Anyone have any idea what might cause that? I have a leaking oil pan and main seal that I don't want to hassle fixing if the motor is about to go! I remember a similar sound coming from a Toyota 4X4 I owned years ago...I had to replace the motor on that one, but the ticking happened everytime I started it.
If the ticking goes away after a short time, it sounds like a faulty lifter. they are hydraulic and you may have one that is noisy until you build up oil pressure. This is a relatively easy fix. Steve
Need to fully remove the rockers and shafts pushrods and the 85# cast iron intake. Thats no easy job. While you are in there check the condition of the remaining 15 lifters. It is easier to replace them while open than later. Also check the condition of the cam lobes and possible replace the cam and nylon timing chain if it has never been opened up.
Thanks, guys. I'm going to let this one ride for awhile, since it is very intermittent and I just had that beast of an intake manifold off a few weeks ago (it was leaking bad in the rear). I don't want to pull it off again right away. I have a nagging leak from the oil pan and rear seal that I should tend to next....yippee!
