Shorter Oil Filter?

Changed my oil over the weekend and noticed, when I placed the used filter in the box the new one came in, it stuck up above the top of the box by about 1\4 inch. Held the used filter and the new filter side by side and sure enough, the new one was 1\4 inch shorter. Has anybody else noticed a shorter filter? (MC FL820S)

Yes, there was a thread about this recently in the oil and lube forum:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-fl-820-s.html

It seems as though the new version is still made by Purolator and has the same anti drainback and relief valve construction, so that's a good thing. I believe that Motorcraft said "no reduction in filtration area" which may mean a slightly shorter filter area but with more pleats(?)

I think the number mentioned was 5/16" shorter.

The fl820s was made shorter for fitment issues with other vehicles.
