Odd part needed!!!

The steering set up for my F1 is progressing along ... the Toyota box mount is done, the pitman arm is done , the steering column is now about to go in ....but getting the right setup for coupling this very rare column in place to the Toyota box is going to be a challenge. A friend of mine donated a spare Jag XK150 ('58 vintage) steering column to the project .... and it is a nifty unit. Looks old ... but has a built in 3" extension system to it. Very cool item .... and the universal joint at the bottom is still quite available. What I need though is either the column shaft or rack input shaft from a damaged MG or Jag from anything of the 50's, 60's, 70's or early 80's ..... yup they are the same shaft size and all use the same u-joint. Guess the Brits liked to keep something for a long time if it worked?? Anyway .... the shaft piece will be used to adapt to the Toyota box, and its own u-joint .... going from the MG/Jag joint. I've asked several if there is anything out there in the way of shafts that are 48 spline, 3/4" diameter that might fit .... but so far no ideas, other than getting one of the original MG/Jag shafts. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

I can't help you directly but these guys will have what you need if anyone does. Everything new and used for British cars of the 50's, 60's and 70's.

RG,
I'm not sure if this is going to help but here's my 2*, I used the stock toy joint which fit over the stock steering shaft, I cant remember what dia the stock shaft was but this way I could adjust the steering shaft and colume to the correct hight that I wanted, used a preoiled bushing between the colume and shaft , drilled the joint then welded the joint to the shaft[/IMG]

One solution might be grinding flat areas into the shaft thus creating "double d" end. This was used on gm cars I believe but borgeson has ujoints that will mate up to double d on one end and should be able to get toyota box on the other end. If they don't make one directly can probably custom make one for you. I had them clearance a joint for me in order to get a couple more degrees out of it and they were super to deal with, basically cost me shipping and not a whole lot more. I know mid-fifty sells ujoints that go directly to the totyota box.

Yes, the aftermarket steering columns use 3/4" DD shafts and Borgeson make a 3/4" DD to Toy box U joint. Mid Fifty carries them.

Thanks guys,

I've been working on this over the last couple of days, and have found several of the sources you mention do have some good options. The using of the Jag column does complicate it some ....but finally I have found a couple of suppliers that can come up with a stub shaft with the required 48 spline 3/4" specs. It looks like what will end up being done is to use an MGB u-joint, the stub shaft, and the stock u-joint with a rag coupler plate welded to the stub shaft to get everything hooked up. It's not the usual
combination I know ... but getting that nifty Jag column to work without hacking it up
was the goal. I'll post photos in a couple of weeks when I have everything worked out.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. Good stuff all.....
