93 f150 tranny problems

I have a 1993 4x4 F-150 with a 5.8L 351 and nearly 209000 miles. I bought the truck with about 176000 miles on it and have not had any serious problems with it until now. Today, while driving down the highway (about 70 mph), i hear a loud crash almost like something hit the ground. Obviously something went very wrong with the transmission (i assume), and as i pulled off the road the truck was shrieking loudly and there was a burning smell. The truck still goes in reverse and it will go in drive also but in drive it made a really clunky noise and i only pulled forward a few feet before putting it back in park for fear that i would further damage what was already messed up. I dont know much about transmissions so could someone tell me what the problem might be and whether it is fixable? Could it be an issue with the torque converter? If the transmission did go out, would it be rebuildable at this point?

pull the codes-if it's the e4od it may help you figure out where the problem lies-is it the overdrive type trans? got the lockout button on the shifter?
