I have a 2000 Explorer XLS with Control Trac. Just recently the 4x4 has engaged itself permanently. I have found the threads that recommend disconnecting either the brown wire into the TC or the wire harness itself. I have disconnected the harness and it is still engaged.
I have about 185,000 miles on it and am not interested in putting any more money into this damn thing. I was thinking of just removing the drive shaft to the front axle as now that I am down here in NC I don't need 4x4.
