Disabling 4x4 Help

I have a 2000 Explorer XLS with Control Trac. Just recently the 4x4 has engaged itself permanently. I have found the threads that recommend disconnecting either the brown wire into the TC or the wire harness itself. I have disconnected the harness and it is still engaged.
I have about 185,000 miles on it and am not interested in putting any more money into this damn thing. I was thinking of just removing the drive shaft to the front axle as now that I am down here in NC I don't need 4x4.

Any thoughts or other advice?

Thanks

Had the same happen to mine (18 months as 2 WD), run it without the front drive shaft, wont hurt anything.

When I finally cracked open my T/C, the locking cam on the clutch pack had lost one of its 3 *****.

I imagine that while running it without the front drive shaft I should also leave the wiring harness to the TC unhooked as well?
