Annoying squeak!!

Annoying squeak!!
Hi
I have the most annoying, loud squeak coming from under the hood. It is getting louder as the weather warms and is loudest at idle. My mechanic says that I need to replace the SERPENTINE BELT AND TENSIONER to the tune of $200+
How serious a problem is this? Will damage occur if left unfixed?
Is there some easy, inexpensive solution to this problem? (ie something to put on the belt to stop squeak?)
(I tried to post this a couple days ago but may have been unsuccessful so thought I would try again.)

well a new belt can go for 20-50 bucks easy to replace, there is a spray for belts to help stop the noise, never used it so not sure how it works, but the best way tovcut cost is simply do the work yourself, not sure how much the pully cost but should be fairly easy to replace
