1.7 roller rocker install lifter preload?

I am going to install 1.7 roller rockers on my 95 5.0 this weekend, and was reading through the instructions that came with the rockers.I am using crane cams rockers. They say I need to adjust preload and maybe add shims, but I have read on here that some guys have had success with just bolting them on and being good to go. What is the correct answer? the motor is completely stock and has never been rebuilt. thanks for any advice!!

Shims are not normally required on an unmolested engine.. one that that has not had the block or heads machined more than as delivered from the factory. The only way to know for sure is bolt them on, if everything goes as it should the pushrod will tighten slightly as the bolt torques to spec, and there will be no additional valvetrain noise when the engine is running.
