If your able to get it out without dropping the spare let us know... I got to put a steering cable in my boat, so this spare tire thing may be next weeks project
Glenn,
did you get 'er? I'm in the same predicimant. can you just twist a little and pull hard on the tube? my ex could do that well, maybe i should call her...
O.K. here is what I did. I unbolted the rear bumper from the frame and let it sag down onto the frame for my hitch. Then I was able to pull the tube straight out. I crawled under the truck with some channel locks and squeezed my arm in above the spare tire and pulled the key out. It took maybe half an hour to have everything back together and I didn't have to break or buy anything.
Here's the procedure I just went through to get a key. Called McGard. They gave me a list of dealers with a master set of keys. Went to the local dealer. They tried each key until one worked. Got the number off that key. Call McGard back, gave them the number. $22 and its in the mail. Good luck.
716-662-8980 is whats listed on the website www.mcgard.com. I got the number from my dealer, but now I can't find it to make sure thats the right one. Sorry.
I just spent an hour mangling my right arm trying to get at the danged insert. Lowered the bumper, pulled the plastic tube off (just twist slightly, wiggle and pull), and tried unsuccessfully to get the adapter out.
Dirtleg, how the heck did you get at the thing? I tried from over the bumper but only managed to tear up my arm........arrrrgh!
If I could get at it, I would do just that. I did manage to get vise grips on it a couple times, but not enough access to work any leverage. I'm gonna try again tomorrow.
Thanks all.
like i said in my previous post i took my tire down with a borrowed key from my bosses 09 f250. you might want to ask anyone who has a fleet. i work for town (municipal)that i live in. we have roughly 20 superdutys. maybe you can lucky. i don't know but maybe if you can't lower your tire to gain access to the tube and key maybe you can let the air out of tire and break the bead...its worth a shot. better than hacking the cable or the mecanical mecanism. good luck.
You can also ask a used car lot. If you have used truck lot that "specializes" in lifted trucks (i.e. buys a truck at auction, then slaps lifts on them and sells them for ridiculous prices), try them. They probably have some keys sitting around or a trick to popping the lock adapter off. I'm sure plenty roll in there missing they spare tire key.
They are also a good place to pick up OEM wheels. I stopped by one looking for an owner's manual supplement (I didn't have the diesel supplement in mine when I bought it). They gave it to me for free (something tells me that a good portion of people that buy from there don't really care about that thing). I noticed quite a few wheels and tires stacked in the back. $50 later I had an OEM Lariat aluminum wheel with some Goodyear all-terrain rubber (about 30% left) for a spare. Can't beat that.
