Hi everyone just found this site and I need some options and advice from someone else besides repair shops. I have 91 250 4x4 with L-6, 5 speed ZF transmission and BW 1356 transfer case.
I have had the zf rebuild twice, once for synchronizes rings and after that and the same problem had another shop look again, now some one else is saying that transfer case is causing the problem, so I logged the results in each gear and range, in 2 wheel high the tranny sounds like it is going to fly apart, 1,2 gears, 3,4,5 it seems ok, but in reverse the tranny just has that high pitch grind, in 4 wheel high I got the same results, but in 4 wheel low the whole system worked perfectly, even climbed my 12" retainer wall before I knew it and climbed back over not problem.
Any ideas? I really am tried of throwing money at the tranny when its not my problem.

I would say if it works fine in 4Lo then it isn't the tranny. The transfer case is totally separate from the tranny, so if the the tranny works fine in 4Lo it is fine. Nothing in the tranny changes when you change from 2wd to 4wd so if the tranny is messed up it will be messed up no matter if its in 4wd or 2wd.

Doesnt the 1356 cas have problems with the shift rail and the oil pump? I believe that the chani is oiled by a small pump and goes bad. The shift rail problem is a from slop in the case halves.
These aluminum cases are plauged with these little problems.
I know they are bad about ruining cases, I think you are right 75F350. I have never messed with one because they are an easy and cheap junk yard find around here. Is your case electric or manual shift they also have a lot of shift motor problems mabey it just isn't shifting all the way into gear or something.

I have a manual shift, and after some though and talking to my son who ran the truck too we agree that 4 wheel high never seemed right, also earlier I change out the fluid and it was gear oil so I replaced it with gear oil, I know now it should be transmission fluid. that heavy oil would have messed up the pump, and forks as well. It is a easy rebuild, and for around 225.00 bucks not a bad idea with the high miles I have. I am rather pissed that the trans guy didn't bother to tell me that he found nothing wrong with the transmission though.
