What caps will fit?
The truck came with a set of semi-good "fair weather" tires on those Alcoa 8-bolt, 8-"slot" aluminum rims. They have four notches cut into the center hole for the hub caps / rings. We bought a set of Cooper STs for winter / off-road use (no serious mudding, just fields), and mounted them on a used set of Alcoas we found. These rims look a lot like the Ford Alcoa rims, same style, but they're more "generic". No notches for the caps. So we're looking for some other hub / center caps and rings for them.
Looking at photos on eBay items, it looks like the caps for later models sorta "friction fit" on the lug studs, rather than using the tabs and notches. But IIRC, the bolt center spacing is slightly different. So I'm guessing they won't fit the lug pattern on this truck. Or will they? I recall that it's only 5mm different (170 vs. 165, IIRC). Enough for the rim not to fit the hub for sure, but I wonder how much leeway there is with the caps.
Or does anyone know of an aftermarket cap that's spaced for the wheels for the OBS, but is held on by the lug studs, like the later ones?
Then tap it on. They hole up great, I have yet to lose one.
The inner diamter was different for the larger hub of the earlier axle, but if yours is not 4wd, there will not be a problem.
If you can find a late model cap, you can use it.
Thanks for the pic; that helps.
Sooo I guess the question is, are there caps of the old-school style (proper depth / hub hole), but with generic clips for the lugs rather than the Ford-specific clips that go in the slots (that I don't have)?
