I have a 2000 f350 dually CC w/ V10 4x4 and 4.30ls rearend. I have a Hum that comes from the rear end under a constant load. If I take my foot off the gas pedal the sound goes away. If I accelerate the motor sound hides it but it is still there. It gets higher and louder with speed. The dealer said it is normal for a heavy duty rear end to make that kind of Hum sound. It goes away when I take my foot off the gas and start to coast. It returns instantly when I apply gas and give it a constant load? Any help would be nice. I have 5000 miles left on the factory warrenty and then it becomes my problem. Thanks for your help
Could be normal but not likely. Has it always made that sound? Usually there are a few causes which cause that kind of noise in the rear, meaning a noise that increases in pitch with speed. They include too much preload on the pinion bearings, which usually shows up after a repair or gear swap, and wrong setup of ring and pinion after a repair or gear swap. But the sound can occure even in a new rear end that has become worn from improper setup at the factory....and yes, that sometimes happens. Because the pitch changes with speed, and dissappears while coasting (didn't you say that?), it's not likely any bearings, which tend to simply growl without the sound changing. Hope this helps.
