I own a 93 F250 Diesel with 182,000 miles on the truck. I recently have started having trouble with the transmission. It started out with the overdrive on/off light flashing only when the truck was stopped or deaccelerating to a stop. When accelerating it would stop flashing. I thought it maybe a clogged filter, new filter and fluid resulted in same problem. I took the truck for an hour drive, pulling a small trailer (total weight ~ 1500#). Reaching my destination I placed the truck into park and there the tranny leaked at least a gallon of fluid (probally overheat). I filled the tranny back up and drove home without leaking a drop. And haven't leaked a drop for a month now.
My concern now is the tranny will feel like it is slipping maintaining any constant speed. The tack will sweep from 2500 to 1500. The warning light will flash on and off all the time now. Does this sound like the tranny is on its last legs, or is the torque converter going, or a vacuum modulator need adjusted?????
If the OD OFF light is flashing, codes should be stored in the computer.
Get the codes scanned at Autozone or buy a code scanner with manual for about $20. A '93 is not OBD-II. Trying to guess the cause of the problem is pointless without the error codes.
