Black tail pipe question

It's been advised that A black tail pipe is most likely a cracked dpf, right ??

So my question is does it get black real quick or a little at a time until it's completely black,

I ask because I notice seeing a little black residue on the inside and not sure if it's soot or what

tia

The rate at which soot accumulates is proportional to the amount the engine produces. Soot is produced at a more rapid rate when the engine is under full load. If you're just using your truck as a daily driver, for the most part, the pipes won't blacken quickly.

I was looking at a used 250 KR with 33k on the odo. The pipes were dirty compared to the another F250 with 55k on it. The salesman was trying like hell to get me to deal on the KR until I told him I won't consider it until it's fixed. He didn't even know what a dpf is.

For the 08/09 and up's, DPF's ensure the pipes stay clean, I have 16K on my truck and they are clean, might be a slight gray if you really get in there to take a look.

As I see it that should be about it.

Its not uncommon to get a dusting or a grayish color in the pipe. That could just be from your driving or ash from your regens. When my DPF went bad the pipes would get just as black as a non-dpf diesel in about 1-2 weeks.

mine turned black inside after 3000 miles. It doenst smoke but they are black. I was looking at the chevy forums and some of those guys are seeing black ones as well. Ford seems to be having more issues with this than Chevy though.

Check out the Dodge forums. They are having the worst problems, then Ford and then Chevy. Not sure if they all use the same design or not or why one would have more issues than another but thats what I have seen as well.

I was just looking at mine again and I don't think it's the black soot

Maybe some grey with dirt stuck to it, anyways I'm planning on cleaning it out
and then keeping an eye on it

I have just under 3000 miles on mine. I always look at the tail pipe and it has always been clean. Yesterday when I arrived home from pulling my fifth wheel 300 miles my exhaust tips were coated with black soot. I was pulling at a constant 60mph, approx. 1700 rpm and approx 12# boost. I did not notice a regen msg. Is this anything to be concerned about?

Is your fifth wheel white? Can you do a "white glove" test on the exhaust side of your trailer and see if it's more black that the driver side? I know road grime can get in the way of this. I got mad as hell cleaning diesel soot off of my white trailers before I got this 6.4. I bet you could tell a difference.

Thanks ruschjj, I just performed your test. I didn't find alot on the trailer however, there is soot on the rear of the truck just above the tailpipe tips.

sounds like a good cleaning and monitor it and see if it is truely a concern. Seems to indicate maybe a issue but too early to tell.

If black smoke is bypassing the DPF (not working). Over time you will get soot build up on the rear back quarter panel and the edge of the bumper.

Thanks folks, I just got back from my local Ford dealer.where they said I didn't have the latest flash. They did that and a manual regen and cleaned the exhaust tips so we can monitor them. They said if the problem continues they will contact Ford for the next step.
I really appreciate all the info on this thread. It enabled me to call them on "IT'S NORMAL".
I was able also to convince them that if the DPF is not able to contain the P we must have a problem.
Thanks again and keep up the great work.

Glad your dealer seems to be sincere about making sure everything is right for you. Some guys here have really fought hard to get as far as you have so far.

This FTE site has me pretty hooked. I can't stay away from it and there is always somebody trying to figure something out. It's fun to throw ideas out there and get torn up 'cause it's stupid or get one that leads to a bunch of others that seem to sort things out.
