I have been toying with finally installing a tuner on my 08 5.4 4x4. I have gotten mixed responses from the vendors. All I am looking for is a more respective throttle response and shifting. If I want a to drive a hot rod I have one with a rag top.
Spoke to one vendor and was told unless I use 91 octane the edge is really not worth it!
Can I use Edge on 87 and not use display?
I have no intention of changing intake or exhaust nor tires.
Tried search but could not really find any thing on this no display topic.
try this link, i've got an edge evo, i was having problems, i posted it on the site, and these guys reponded. i called him on the phone, hr pretty much went thru the whole trouble shooting with me. they pretty knowledgeable, and they do custom tunes also. but they were a really big help!
Edge (and Gryphon) is the best tuner on the market for these trucks...they serve the biggest # of needs/wants, and have that wicked dislpay to monitor 5 parameters
The SCT style tuner is more functional in terms of tuning, but it's slightly harder to use, and you have to buy custom tunes for it's use.
But yeah, you can use the Edge (Gryphon) to install the tunes, and then remove it. It is not required to be connected for the tunes to be used.
And that stuff about 91 octane is pure B.S
the Tow tune alone is worth the money. It doesn't even touch your fuel maps, merely adjusts the tranny shift points/pressure...the whole truck is a different beast with that alone.

Tylus, do you have any thoughts on tuners for the 4.2L? I'm mostly interested in a tow tune, and don't want to do any intake or exhaust mods.
to be honest, I don't think the Edge supports the V-6 straight out of the box. I believe it only does the 4.6 and 5.4 motors
but if you contact PHP about the Gryphon, they can easily set you up with their version of the Edge (Gryphon). I'm sure that Bill would be more than happy to write you a custom tow tune if he doesn't already have one laying about.
