I sure this has been covered a million times but couldnt find jack in the search. I want to get a programmer for my 01 7.3 with a 6speed. Its got a large K&N kit on it with the devider and exhuast brake already. I want something to get better MPG with hopefully little more power but not to much been down the road with my dodge and it went threw 4 trans. thanks
If your looking to get one I would get the DP Tuner in the next month. Riffraff is having a special for the month of May that I plan on taking advantage of in the next week. Free shipping and 1 free tune with the purchase of the chip and 2 tunes. That will end up being cheaper than most programmers out there shipped to ya.
Loose the K&N unless you want to grenade your engine and go wit a 6637 mod... Clay at RiffRaff can help you with that... I throw one in for PHP Phoenix Fuel Sipper.. Haven't ran it long enough to say how much of an improvement.. Also just tweaking that specific tune myself at the moment to correct a TC issue but as you are stick you dont have to worry about Tranny tuning...
6637 mod is ok, but if you have the money go with the AFE stage II intake with their pro dry S filter. It comes with battery box. I had a intake like yours and when I put this on I gained 2mpg on the highway.
Jody, Tony & Bill are all great tuners, but don't expect drastic MPG improvements from them. They do however offer lots more power with the same or a slightly improved MPG over stock.
If you want to improve MPG's, slow down and shift sooner. Was the dodge an auto or a stick? The ZF-6 should handle the power fine, but if you get too much you'll need to upgrade your clutch.

Good point, you will see a more significant MPG improvement with a Tuned Auto than a Stick... But basically when you tune an auto for better MPG you are really just trying to get it to perform more like a stick shift anyway... in other words, the less slippage happening inside the automatic tranny and the lower the RPM shifts the better your MPG.. However as F350-6 points out keeping your foot out of the gas and shifing sooner in the manual tranny will yeild the best MPG gains for you. Acutally I am working on my own MPG tune as we speak... need to go take load it onto the chip now and go for a test drive.... But I have the TC locking up in 1-4 with early shifts and advanced timing etc...
OH if you want another good MPG suggestion, Think about doing electric fans, Flex-a-lite part #278.. I already emailed Clay about them , he just added them to his product lines... waiting on his pricelist for that... It a good mod if you are not going to exceed 18000lb Combined GVWR . it takes a significant amount of horespower to constantly spin that huge piece of plastic on the front of the engine
Call Clay at RiffRaff Diesel Performance one of the sponsors here. He has a sell on DP-Tuners right now and he can also get you a complete 6637 Kit and more to get you on your way. The 6637 does almost as good of a job as the 500 dollar systems so yuor really better off and save the money with the 6637.
