Not to cut on the Canadians, I have nothing against you all, but I'd like to know why Ford, a company who makes most of it's money in America would build all of the new F-150 motors in Canada? They said they employ thousands of people, couldn't that help our sagging economy?
I figure that the best way to keep peace on earth is to spread the business around. I guess that's what "Global" is all about. Besides getting rid of Husien, the best was to keep peace over there is to keep buying the only thing that they got, viz. OIL. If Mexico can build some parts that dont break e.g. rear springs then thats good for both of us. In this senario the Big Shots in all of these places have more at stake when the War Drums start beating. We are all less likely to have to fight their stupid battles. Canadian built engines have been better that the rest of the car/truck that they were put into.
Why shouldn't Ford continue to operate plants in Canada? They certainly do sell alot of trucks here.
Do Canadians not deserve to have jobs or a healthy economy?
It's really depressing when Americans only see Canada as as market to sell US made goods and as a cheap source for raw materials and power.
In many ways the Canadian economy has become much more efficient than that of the US.
Many American companies operate Customer support call centres here because we have an educated workforce that can speak "American".
It's very depressing to see local lumber mills sitting idle while the raw material is loaded onto trains and shipped south of the border because of some loophole in NAFTA that blocks our lumber from being exported, but not our trees.
Sorry for the rant, I just wish Canadians would be a little more patriotic at times and a bit less willing to sell ths country out.
People in the U.S. need to get over the idea that everything must be done here. A strong Canadian and Mexican economy is good for all of us NORTH AMERICANS! Our economies are inextricably linked.
More to the point, we are in an era of unprecedented Globalism. What happens to the economies of other countries eventually affects all of us. We (the G8 countries) need to do more to help other countries to develop their economies. If it doesn't make sense morally, it certainly is in our self-interest to open new markets for our products and services by helping poorer countries to develop.
We all benefit from this globalization. Remember, this sword cuts both ways. As an example, I'm a U.S. employee of a Canadian company. This company could easily take their high-paying jobs back to Canada and still sell their products in the U.S. with little or no negative effects. They choose not to do this because of the benefits of having a local presence.
I'm not saying globalization is bad, but during world war 2, the only reason we were able to produce so many weapons so fast was because we were the largest exporting country in the world. Now, we are the largest importing company in the world. We make hardly anything we use in this country anymore and if another situation arises, like another depression we're going to be screwed. Ford was the most major producers of jeeps during world war 2, and Canada was one of the first countries to send pilots over. But what if someday we aren't so friendly with canada anymore? It's not out of the realm of possibility, although they'd prolly not be too happy cus we buy most of their goods.
Good point Truckfreak69. If there was another World War, where would we get the steel and the technology to make steel products since China seems to be making most of our steel products? And, since most (many ?) of our steel mills have gone out of business, we would be up the creek without the paddle.
Where I live ( in British Columbia ) , seems every truck on the road here is a Ford (mostly Super Duties) . Have to keep everyone happy
And I suppose it`s quite a bit cheaper too . I sure notice the money difference when looking at parts online . I.E. My daughter needs a new water pump for her car ( which I`m stuck doing today ) , I looked at carparts.com (US) to get a feel for what they were selling for , $ 37.00 US . I ordered the part here yesterday , $ 27.00 CAN . That comes out to about $ 18.00 US . Big difference .
The CD player I bought a couple weeks ago here for $ 249.00 CAN is near the same price in the US . If I had paid US $$ for the deck here it would have been around $ 168.00 US . I think the US citizens are getting hosed big time and dont realize it .
