i just got a used 390 that has been built up and am trying to drop it in my truck. i want to replace the torque converter while it is out but cant figure out what one to get. talked to a couple of people and they said you need to know what cam is in there to get the right stall. is this nessacary or can i just go and pick up one that stalls at 1200 and call it good. what could happen if i were to do this because i really dont want to take the engine apart to figure out the cam. it is going in a 1976 f150 with a 3 speed c6 trans, will be use for towing and street driving. please help. any suggestions greatly appreciated.
"built up" has ALOT of grey area as to what it actually is.
Why are you replacing the TC? Do you want more stall then stock?
The torque the motor produces and what rpm will determine how much a convertor will stall. It is a science, though likely in your situation, a stock type will be better. You don't want a high stall convertor and TOW with it. Any slippage will induce HEAT and that will destroy a transmission.
the only reason i was going to replace is becuase it is a 30 year old truck and i figure if something goes out i can at least say it isnt the converter. so are you saying that i shouldnt worry about it and just re use the stock one? thanks for your input
