1988 4.9 converson...

I am converting my 88 4.9 from fuel injected to a new idea we are working on here at work. It will still use injectors but they will be set up on a carburator type system and it will be ran off of a new computer. I was wondering what was the last year that ford put a carburator on the 4.9 so that I could get an intake from the local salvage yard. Also since I will be doing away with my computer I will need to go to the older style electronic ignition system. The one with the module mounted on the finder well. What was the last year that this was used? This thing we are working on should be really cool. Looking like it will increase the gas milage by a good bit and cut the emitions down to the point that it will pass the test without any converters or smog system.

That sounds like a throttle body injection system. In general multipoint injection is superior because it takes the problem of keeping an air/fuel mixture in suspension out of the picture, fuel metering can be more precise since each injector is feeding 1 cylinder, and the long runner intake produces better cylinder filling which means more TQ. So of course I'm wondering... since your "new" design still uses injectors why can't you use the existing setup?

In any event I believe 1987 was the first year for EFI on the I6 so all earlier trucks will have carbs.

Im not the designer of the system. It is symular to a throttle body system from what I can tell but his system mounts on the carburator intake. It also incorporates thermocouplings.
