My ford brothers, I have a 68' F100 Custom Cab with a 360 standard three on the tree. Its got 350,000+ miles on it...never rebuilt. (body is striaght w/little bed rail rust. Here is the deal, I think my head gasket or engine is gone (horrible oil pressure). I have been wanting to switch to an automatic tranny for years (getting lazy in my old age). What is a good engine/ auto tranny combo to put in this truck. This is not a show truck...just an old farm truck that has been taken care of...hauler and Lowes runner. I have been thinking about going with a 6 banger or small v8. Cost is an issue. Any suggestions?
Depending on where you live there are quite a few 80's thru mid 90's trucks around with serious rust issues that can usually be had pretty reasonable. If you're looking for reliability you've got choices. John mentioned some good ones and I've got 1 more. 300 EFI 6 banger with a C6 auto. Granted you wouldn't have overdrive but with sane driving and decent maintanence the combo is just about bullet proof.
