I found a mint like new always garaged 2003 Expy XLT. It has 65k miles and it's a 4x2 with the 4.6 Triton. The thing ran and drove like it was brand new! A little lacking on power but was what I expected for the little 4.6 in an SUV. The asking price is $10,900 what do you all think? Looked it over it's and AZ truck so very clean, everything seemed like new on it......... Is there anything I should look out for or check over before I pull the trigger on this truck? Were there any common issues with the 2003 models that I should look for?? Thanks in advance for any input.........
I paid 7800 for an 03 black one owner XLT 4WD with the 5.4 from a dealer last december with 96000 miles. So over 10 seems high to me especially with the 4.6 engine and 2WD. Seems like the gas mileage wasn't much better for the smaller engine either. Mine gets 15+ on highway and around 13-14 in town.
I have been researching these triton V-8's and man seems like there are tons of people having spark plugs blowing out of the heads on these motors? Whats the story behind this, and Ford doesn't even cover the repair in all of the cases I have learned about? That's 1 big red flag.....
I am kind of leaning more away from one of these Expy's...... someone give me something to re-assure me??? Is this really that common of a problem? What's the fix and how much to repair that issue?
The spark plug issue is fairly common, but if properly installed and torqued, it should not be a problem, I had a 98 Expy with the 5.4l Triton and had close to 200,000 miles and never had a plug blow out. As far as the 03 you mentioned, if you are not happy with the power of the 4.6, DON'T buy it. The MPG difference is minimal at best, and the price does seem a bit high for a 2 wheel drive 4.6. Just my input, good luck!
Definetely sounds like a high price since you can get low mile 5.4L 04 EB's for about that price. At least around here.
What comes to the spark plug blowouts, I've had Expeditions for the past 5 years and never had any problems with plugs. The 00 had 130K when we sold it and now the 04 just turned over 100K a couple of days ago.
Time for a plug change on the 04 soo, though... ***knocking on wood***
I had a '97 EB 4x4 that went 230,000 with absolutely zero problems outside of regular maintenance. I now have both an '03 and '04 4x4, love them both, no problems so far on either. By the way picked up the '04 EB about 6 months ago for $12000 from a dealer with 60k miles and it has the nav and entertainment system. So I would definitely recommend them, but would look around for a better deal.
I have owned an 03 EB 5.4 since 2006, loaded with everything on it - Love it - A couple things I have had to do - rear A/C flapping door replacement was several hundred $$ - its a very common issue - bearings on the front lower only - other than that only general maintenance - I would do it all again - great truck!! In fact I plan on buying abother 3 year old version soon. There are great deals out there.
Negotiate down, price sounds high - do the normal pre-buy check out for any vehicle - offer $8500 if it checks out. If they won't budge, no problem Ford made a jillion of these, you'll find another.
The spark plug issue was resolved starting with the 2003 model so you wouldn't have a problem with them blowing out on you. I'd personally opt for the bigger 5.4L as that engine is just too small for such a hulking truck. I agree too - an 03 XLT for $10k is probably a bit much but $8500 would be fair. If it was an Eddie Bauer, then $10k would seem about right. Also, have an 06 EB with 105,000 miles on it and haven't had any trouble whatsoever and absolutely love the truck.
