ok, my truck needed a transplant, so this weekend im going to pick up a 460! its from a 78 lincoln, and needs to be rebuilt. and like the title says, this is a first for me, but theres no better way to learn than by doing. so ill probably need alot of help from you guys. the first thing im going to have to buy are pistons. so what kind should i look into? i really want the engine to perform and it isnt going to be a daily driver, and i dont know anything about the different kinds of pistons. another one ill need first is what kind of transmission? i would really like to switch over to a 4 or 5 speed, but how much power can these trannys handle?
You should try posting another thread about the 460 in the 385 series forum. they live 460!
The 5 speeds behind the 460 can take quite a bit. I'm not too sure what rig we're talking about that it's going in.
first we need to know what vehicle this is going into.
second call around to some machine shops for quotes on inspection, hottank and possible bore costs. You dont buy pistons and such till you know what size the cylinders are.
once you get the block back from machine shop all cleaned up and ready you can buy/order your install kit that would include pistons, rings, bearings etc... the machine shop could possibly even order you exactly whats needed to help take out the guess work.
A good machine shop will want the pistons so they can set the proper clearance when they bore/hone your block. Then they can also press the pistons to the rods, unless yours uses clips.
ok, sorry for the delay on all of this lol, ive been trying to find that tranny still, picked up a C6 yesterday, block is back, didnt need to be bored apparently, just cleaned up and checked for any problems. now, back to the pistons, the crank i have has a 4.500 stroke and says it needs BBC rods.....which hurts me deeply lol
wait a second, are you installing a stroker kit or something? did you explain this to the machine shop so proper clearancing could be done? I would have had the machine shop order what you needed since they know the specs. might have even had them do the bottom end install to help take out any guess work.
