I have a noise coming from the engine compartment. Sounds like its coming from the fan/belt area. SOunds like a worn bearing?

Water Pump?
ALternator?

122K on a 99 f-250 sd v-10.

Its gettting louder.

Started Friday night... I replaced two rear springs Satuday.

Before I'd go with either of those, I'd look at the belt tensioner pulley's. Pull the belt and start it.... that's either proof it's ONE of the bearings anyway.... borrow or buy a stethoscope ( for cars) to isolate the noise. BE VERY CAREFUL AROUND THE MOVING BELTS!!!

The bearings in the w/p and alt spin fast enough it will sound like a squeal. If you have a long screw driver (same idea as the stethoscope), put your ear on the handle and the tip on the suspected parts. The part that's making the noise will sound louder than the rest.

I'd go with the tensioners before anything else.

I replace my tensioners every few years because they start to squeak. Just did them 6 months ago, second time, with 8 years total since date of manufacture.

Cheap insurance, if you ask me.

i took a stethescope to the water pump and I think it is it... Everything else just hums, while the water pump is making a scratching noise...

Anything I need to know before I do the water pump?

How do I remove the main belt?

Is it just a few bolts? Do i need to do a pressure test on the water pump?

I helped my neighbor do his PSD excursion and it was a piece of cake. The v10 is probably just as easy if you have wrench for the fan nut. The belt tensioner should have a 1/2" drive hole that you can clip in a breaker bar and remove the tension from the belt. Once the belt is loose, slip it over the alternator and unthread it from the water pump. Then a half dozen bolts later, the pump should come free.

You need to remove the accessory belt which you do by using a 1/2" breaker bar on the tensioner itself to relieve the tension. Once the belt is off it just 3 bolts and it's off.

EDIT: Sorry I just seen ReAX already explained how to remove the belt.

If you have the type of upper radiator hose that needs to be removed in order to change the serpentine belt, now would be a good time to change it. Get the one for dual alternators. It will fit the half-round casting on the driver's side of the engine, and the belt will be "inside" it instead of "outside". NAPA number is 9066.

The 1999 truck has a pulley that is grooved. The 2002 truck has one that is smooth. Is there any harm is swapping them out? I went to Autozone and all they had was a smooth plastic pulley?

I took the one of the 02 and swapped it with the 99. It works......

Any harm in it?

Did you spray the belt with soapy water while the engine is running....if the noise goes away then its just a noisey belt. Sounds like a water pump or idler bearing through.

If I'm not mistaken, the tensioner and idler are both on the smooth side of the belt, correct? So, no, no need for grooves.

The one thing that IS important though, is the '99 has a 6-rib belt, and the 2000-up have a 8-rib, don't they? So are the idler and tensioner pulleys the same width?

Do you have AC? I think non AC trucks have grooved tensioners and AC trucks have smooth.
