hey all. long time lurker, 2 or 3 time poster. quick question, how hard is to change the u-joints on a 97 f150, 4.6 liter extended cab 4x4? i do my own maint. and basic repairs and was curious if this is something that a normal guy can do or do i need a shop with $20000. worth of tools. the u-joints are not broke, just making the "dry metal" grinding noise. had it in the shop for a radiator flush and they noticed it was u-joints. i thought it might have been rear brakes. thanks for the help.
It's not very difficult. Normal tools(sockets) and maybe a snap-ring tool.
Just unbolt the 2 little U bolts in the back end and pull the hole driveshaft out of the tranny. Now you can take it out from under the truck, put it on a workbench or your driveway and work on it.
Only problem I ever had was the little cup coming off the U joint itself,so ya need to be careful to keep them on there.
It may not make a difference but, I would mark the yoke and the flange to the drive shaft before dis-assembly and put them back together the same way that they came apart. Good luck!
