U Joints ???

Hay All:

as a few of you know, I just finished wheel hub assembly/ball joints.
not only was I needing to do this. I was also chasing down some a viberation/steering wheel hop type of situwation, it only does it between 32 and 35 MPH. doesnt matter what I'm doing. Even breaking. I also put the truck in nutral once, still did it.

So as far as I know from my experance of a Ford ranger. it looks like the u joint are the next place to check.
I had a ranger once that they went bad and it would only effect it at 50-55 mph.

this truck is a 2000 F250 SD V10.

when it happens the entire steering wheel will viberate kind of shake up and down. not voilantly, and the passenger door rattles and a few other things in the truck shake and vib.

any thoughts ?

thanks

because of the direction of the spin, u-joints and driveshafts should give you up and down as well as right and left. Axle, wheel and tire vibrations should be back/front and up/down oscillations.

The front axle/DS should not spin in 2wd, just the hub outward. I'd suspect it's more of a out of balance type vibration that hits such a high frequency above 35mph that it's no longer bouncing anything else. Try the Ujoints, but if that doesn't fix it, you might also try having the driveshaft balanced and the tires road forced balanced.

I don't think it is the joints.

Check the tire inflation, condition, and wheel balance.

rotate the tires and see if any changes.

Because of some of your other posts here, you seem to be pissed off that no one here has helped you with your problem.

Please go back over what you have done, and please describe the exact problem in detail.

Also, have you tried rotating the tires to make sure it's not one of your tires, even though they are new?

Before going to the trouble of replacing u-joints like ReAX said the front drive axles and driveshaft should not spin in 2wd. If you have ESOF (you didn't state weather you did or not) it is possiable the locking hubs are not disengaging and the drive axles and drive shaft are spinning as your drive down the road. Easy test is pull the locking hubs off and go for a drive. If you still have the issue you need to look else where.

It seems to me that front U-joints would rarely go out since they are only used in 4WD and the each one is only pulling with 1/3rd of the force. (A third to rear wheels).

New hubs, new ball joints, new shocks, new tires, alinment, new steering damper.

yup rotated, had all 4 balanced. I have checked the ujoints, the ole screwdriver thing..... couldn't find any play..

have put several miles in it sence 1st post, about 15 to 20,000
it's NOT getting worse or better, this has me confused. if it were ujoints they should have goten worse. or dropped a drive shaft....

Checked and the weights are still on the Drive shaft..

I own a landscaping company and this truck pull's about 2 to 3 tons a day. the issue is still there reguardless of loaded or not....

Maybe a worn spline on the pinion/yoke. Ford had to go with a longer yoke at some point to correct that problem.

Could it be wheel bearing? My explorer had similar issue but also road noise like I had aggresive mud tires on was worse in 4x4. pulled wheel bearings and drivers side was really dry and stiff and it would pop while turning by hand.. I know this is a smaller vehicle but still might be your problem.

Did all of this start before the work you have done or after?
Also just because the weights are on the driveshaft doesn't mean that it is still in balance. Is there a chance that the driveshaft got bent at some point in time?
Is this an auto or a stick?
