I have a 72 Ranchero with a 9" rear axle assembly with 28 splines. I have received a great 9" rear axle assembly with 31" splines from a '77 LTD. Both have 3.00 gearing. I was going to sway the entire assemblies but the mounts for the two are just totally different. My Ranchero's rear is leaking and really in need of a rebuild. The LTD's looks almost new (car only had 68K orig. miles). no leaks and the car drove great. My question is this:
Can I just swap over the 31" spline axles and the carrier with gears and all? Would the LTDs parts working in the Rancheros axle housing?

Ok, I'll try. I was just over at the [link:hiqties.hypermart.net/9inch.html#top|9" web site] and it seems that those rear axles are pretty similar. I'd guess that you could swap the center section and the axles between the two vehicles. But I could be wrong.
It looks to me that every thing will swap...I have the small housing bearings (near the wheel end. I may be out of luck using the axles...which will cause me to scrap the idea. Too bad if the only problem is a housinh axle bearing! Anyone with any thoughts?
