1988 Ranger Help

We have 1988 with 2.3 FI and our troubles are it is like it loads up going down the Rd black smoke coming out tailpipe ? when you get to a even speed or RPM is when it is the worst ? give it gas and increase your speed runs fine even when first started runs good at ideal?
what we have replaced so far heat temp, and the sensor which i cant rember the name of is located on the under side of the intake down on very bottom say buy oilo filter if this helps ? tryed map sensor, cap rotor, plugs were just put in last fall and has run good until early spring even replaced most all vacum lines, sprayed some either around and found no air leaks ? well I know we have the right folks on hear to help us out and thanks for those that do.

Well, old EEC-iV is not so sensative for air leak becouse there is no MAF and no difference for MAP where air comes in. ECM does coalculation with MAP and IAT to get mass air consumption. So be sure that MAP hose (with two 6mm rubber fittings) is ok.

OK, black smoke related problems are usually related with bad O2 sensor, leaking injectors and installed wrong ign. timing. I think you have old 8valve 2.3 OHC with distributor, so check timing

Hey thanks for the tips yes it has a distributor with no points we even chaged the module on it. it is almost like its getting to much gas ? would it be the fuel pressure regulator ? will check the hoses you are talking about pretty sure we put all them on new, will check back in later and let yas know what going on.

onece working on big truck i could not understand why fuel pressure was so high that fuel leaked inside engine and damaged ECM (fuel cooled)... I found return line clogged ))

Could be FPR, it's easy to check! Run it for a little bit, maybe a minute. Then shut it down and pull the vacuum line off at the regulator, and look for signs of raw fuel. The regulator uses a thin diaphragm to sense vacuum and adjust pressure, if that diaphragm ruptures (commonly caused by hardening due to ethanol and age) fuel will be drawn through the rupture into the vacuum line, and into the intake manifold. I would also suggest pulling codes, KOER tests may reveal the problem, or at least a clue. Pocket scanners are cheap at Wally world, $35 will get you a digital one. I had an '88 2.9l that did the same thing, ended up being a fouled O2 sensor. Just some stuff to ponder...
