Tranny model

again the truck isn't here and im looking at some parts and need the model.

<!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message --> 87, F150 5.0 4x4. Its an auto.

The trans indicator reads P R N OD 2 1
Is this considered a 3 speed, or a 4 speed because of the overdrive?

Probably the AOD. Too early for 4R70W and E4OD, AODE not found in trucks IIRC. A bit weak, but fixable. See ID info here:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...ers_Guide.html

As to 3 or 4: If the speeds are integrated into the trans, and controlled via one shifter (even with the silly buttons), it's a 4 or 5 or x speed trans.
Manual or auto does not matter.

If it has an OD unit on the tail, controlled by it's own switch or other mechanism, it's 3+ OD, or like Corvettes, Volvos etc, 4+ OD. (Even though the Volvo button was on the stick, the OD was on the tail separate from the trans. Not sure about the 'Vette.)
