Theft protection

I have a pretty nice 72 F 100. Unfortunately, I have to park it on the street in front of my house. Last night I heard noises outside at about 3:30 in the morning. I got up to look out and saw three a@#holes looking through the window of the truck. I yelled and they took of running. I've parked it there for 15 years and have never had a problem. But now I'm paranoid. To have it stolen, especially after just putting a lot of money into it, would add insult to injury. So I'm wondering what you guys are doing to make it harder for the thieves to get your truck. I say "make it harder" because I realize that if they want it bad enough they're going to get it no matter what you do. I've tried a battery disconnect, and taking one of the wheels off - but that looks pretty redneck, sitting out in front of the house with only 3 wheels on it. Any suggestions?

Well you can't shoot the iceholes because your life wasn't threatened, some kind of electrical defeat is excellent, and there are several that will soon be offered next.

I just moved to a small town up the road, and now leave the key on the seat under a glove or something.

I make my living working in peoples homes and it never crosses my mind to take something.

I want everything that is mine and nothing of yours.

I live in a neighborhood that is 96+% Microsofties; their idea of a truck is an Escalade SUT or a Blackwood-type Lincoln. You need to move- not the cheapest solution, sure, but you'll sleep like a baby knowing nobody in your neighborhood could drive it away.

Aw yes I've had to park my truck on the street too. #1. I've added the steering wheel-club locking bar. #2.A blinking red LED that, I rigged to a relay that goes off when ign. key is turned on #3 An alarm system that is even wired to the hood release latch lever and door jam switches that trips it system#4. A under the fender Battery main disconnect #5.A Hood cable & Padlock #6wind-wing locks. If you've ever had any type of vehicle ever stolen then maybe you can under stand why I've made it so had for them to take it..
Yes it can still be taken thou but dammit they will really have to work at it..
Not always but sometimes put the transfer case into neural when, I see someone eyeing it that I haven't seen before.. This is a must for me now that I don't have my big camper on it ant more..my 2cents

Pull the coil wire and rotor. Take them with you. Thieves carry a few tools but not a parts store. I'm lucky enough to rent a garage for mine.

i am getting window glass film, not tint but this film that makes it almost imposible to break it, if they hit the window and it doesnt break they will take off because of the noise they just made and cant get anything. i also have a switch for my electric fuel pump that i can turn off (it is under the dash) i also have the duel gas tanks and can put the switch into OFF mode so no gas will flow, very few people will ever find it and get it to one tank or the other. also i think my truck looks like the person who owns it will shoot you for messing with it and the fact that many of my neighbors have seen me carry a gun into it and from it to the house i think helps. but for me when it is at my house it is probably the safest place it ever is, i live in Irvine that is/has been the safest big city in the USA.

heres a cheap simple way to try and keep folks from steeling your truck. pull the small wire off the solinoid marked "S" cut the end off it and save, add more wire to the end and route inside the cab to a pushbutton horn switch mounted on the floor somewhere to the left of the brake or clutch peedel under the rubber flooring then run a wire from the pushbutton back to the soliniod splice the end to that wire and hook back up to the "s" terminal on the soliniod now when you go to start your truck it wont untill you step on the hidden button

Orich hit on the best theft deterent yet. Keep the hood chained shut. For most of the trucks out there if they can get the hood open they can get it fired. Hood chains along with hidden switches, missing parts, ect. will stop most of them.

Nothing is totally fool proof though. A local guy was known for chaining his Corvette to a light pole where he works. He always tied it to the same pole. One day he walked out to find it on the other side of the lot chained to another pole. Same chain, same lock. A note on the windshield read " If we want it we'll get it". Never found out who did it and he still has the car.

Back, I mean way back in the late 40' & early 50's I remember coming out of the movie house with my family only to find that someone had stolen the battery once, the Dists cap & wires, and coil-wire once, And one rainy night the wipers,a few times gas,Day time 5 sacks of food parked on the main street. only to list some childhood memories..Not listing my next(55) yrs thou! The Point is it may only happen once in a life time and it's gone..

I think 72 Custom is probably right in that most people would not be interested in stealing an old truck - they want something newer and more modern. Some might not even know how to drive them. One time I took it in for tires and I had to drive it into the bay because the guy didn't know how a "three on the tree" worked. On the other hand, people here in Denver are saying that these old Fords with the boxy-looking front end are in pretty high demand in Mexico. Guys are stealing them, getting them across the border somehow, and quickly selling them for $1500 to $2,000.

Craig- I was joking about the moving part, but the part about they not being able to drive it is true. The thing about Mexico is also true; I've had friends from Texas and Arizona tell me about stuff getting ripped off and being found down at/around the border w/Mexican tags, used as drug running rigs, et cetera. If I'm not mistaken, somebody on this forum had their '70-ish 4x4 ripped off from Mt.Vernon, WA and was found almost a year later in New Mexico or Arizona by the Border Patrol. Was used by 'coyotes' for drug and human trafficking and the cops had been watching it. It had been beaten on, but the guy was happy/lucky to get it back.

Heh heh, we did that to a kid in high school that thought he knew everything there was to know about engines. It took skillet all day to figure it out.

I agree with the coil wire trick + a hood lock. Cheap and easy.

You could also hook the horn up to the #1 spark plug wire... Won't stop 'em but they'll be easy to track down.

Honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk, honk!

how does the hood lock work? anybody just modifying it or installing an additional bracket that can be easily used with a padlock?

i think most people use a chain and a pad lock through the skeliton of the hood and the core suport, atlest that is what it looks like to me when i see people do it.
