Dont know about an 80, but on my 68 F-100 I never wasted my time with a timing light.

I simply used racers timing. Advance it til it pinged slightly under load & then backed it off a hair.

You might want to try that to get you in the ball park & then put your light on it.

Dont know if an 80 has a spout connector, but if it does you need to remove it to go to base timing.

8 degrees "off" TDC? Which direction? I would assume BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) but it makes a major difference. Timing light will be more accurate than "by ear". No SPOUT connector on an '80 and I don't think the distributor used a vacuum advance anymore by 1980 either. But on the off chance that you do still have a vacuum advance on the distributor you will need to pull the vacuum line and plug the line so there is no vacuum leak while you set the timing. Vacuum advance is pretty obvious it will be a vacuum line directly into a dash pot on the side of the distributor.

Nope timing should advance as RPM's increase.
