Looks funny to me, too. It must have been the owner's doing.
Not too long ago, I was told this...
When the new trucks arrive at dealerships, the pre-delivery guys installed mirrors that were stored in cabs before giving it the owner.
I guess the original owner got there first and told the guys to mount it on the fenders instead. That's one guess!
Yup, I saw that happen alot. Sometimes it was a salesman's newly retired dad and mom were going to travel the country during the summer months. The salesman would worry about them, knowing how dad would drive and would have the mirrors mounted that way thinking it would help dad.
Or a salesmen plans on taking his family to visit distant relatives, and go camping with the family. They have big mirrors put on, and get an extra 100 lbs of undercoating sprayed on.
We would run them across town because they didn't like the factory tires, and would get them replaced before delivery.
I know both my trucks are super cabs but neither have the spare tire box. One has a tool box and the other has nothing. Both are F-350 so you can't say all F-350 had that. I know the one with the toolbox is a camper special and I think the other one is just missing the emblems. Both are the trucks in the pics at the beginning of this thread.
Supercabs do not get the spare tire in the box.
As I stated for the millionth time, ALL 1973/79 F350 2WD Stylesides with 140" wheelbase has the spare tire in the box. REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT IS A SUPER CAMPER SPECIAL, CAMPER SPECIAL, OR NON SUPER/CAMPER SPECIAL. ALL MEANS ALL!
I know this...I have cold and hard facts. I am typing this information from official Ford sources. What about you?
===========================
The Camper Special package has more equipment beyond the emblems and mirrors. Hell, the recreational mirrors weren't limited to Super/Camper Specials. I have the same mirrors on my '78 F150. I also have the passenger side toolbox. Huh? Just because it has something, it doesn't mean it has all of it.
Just another comment (question) about the mirrors. In post 1 & 4 arent they mounted on the wrong sides of the truck? l thought they should turn out from the truck so you had a wider view. l just put newer version of these on my dump and they are turned out. l could very well be wrong. My wife tells me that alot.

It can be used either side, your preference. If I was towing, I'd flip them to get a wider view. If not, flip closer to the truck.
