yea, having a little hotrod like that is fun but i wish i got to drive it more often, but the 8-10mpgs it gets is what keeps it in the garage more often than not. my dads attached to it since hes had it since 71 and has been drag racing it ever since i cant even guess how many engines and trannys hes gone through with it but that happens when a car lives on the strip. but hey thats why ive always had ford trucks, they may be no hot rod stock but theyll do everything you ask for all day long. i kinda liked my 4.9 5 speed truck better than my current truck. it was nice to be able to hop in it and know you can just drive all day and it wont complain. nice thing was when the starter crapped out i just rolled it downhill and popped the clutch lol. i will say it was quite a zippy little truck till you got to about 80mph it just ran out of steam. ill guarantee ya ill own ford trucks till the day i die lol.
Right now its 50 shot but i can change the jets to go as big as 150. Wanted to start small & work my way up . The first time i sprayed it i lost fuel press so now i have to upgrade the fuel pump & fuel system. So more work ... Money is tight right now so it will have to wait . But the truck runs good now & fuel press is good i just cant spray it . So i got a full bottle of nitrous but cant use it...But work is starting to pick up so it shouldnt be to long. Cant wait to see what it will do . Lew
sounds cool man, now i know what to do if i want to build my own 14 second truck lol. id be interested to see what it does as well. good luck and cool truck!
gloorm, it looks like you have your heart set on an 351 swap. Just because it isn't the best option doesn't mean it won't work. I'm sure that there are a couple of folks that have added to this thread that have done worst things. Hell, there are a least two out there that waste money on Mopars and Chevies. I would hope you have found somebody locally that has done something like this before and can help you out.
Also, just a thought, if your state doesn't care you might think about a carbureted 351 and C6 combo. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the computer trying to run a bigger motor and it would give you a HD trans too. You'd lose OD and gas mileage would take a dump but you shouldn't tow in OD anyway and your young enough not to care about MPG.
Have fun with your truck and we'll be here to help.
I have a real similar GM experience to 6CylBill. I drive a 2005 Chevy Kodiak 4500 4x4 wrecker at work, its an awesome truck. The Duramax makes good power, it looks cool, and it turns as sharp as my F250. The problem is that it can be the biggest piece of s**t sometimes. In the 12 years my grandfather owned it and the 3 I have owned it, my F250 has NEVER (excluding 2 times the lights were left on and the battery died) not started when it was asked to, I can't say the same for the Chevy.
