The other day i was driving down the road and my rear end felt a little loose, so i stopped and air up my tires. When i got back on the road i got worse now it was rocking the whole truck. I limped it to school and started looking for a broken leaf spring or something. Then i saw that my 9in. axle housing had actually cracke at the welding. I figure the previous owner wrapped a chain around it to pull out another truck. So any way i call up a few places foe a housing, and since i needed bearings, the axles too. The cheapest i could find was $150. So I went and paid for it so they could pull it for me. When i got back to pick it up it wasnt a 9 in. it was a d-44. the guy swore up and down that it was a 9 in. and that my axle must be an old style since the pumpkin came out the front. Its was however a complete axle and i didnt have the time to find another so i grabbed it. It bolted up fine but ofcourse the driveshaft didnt fit so i had to have it shortened.
MY ?: is the D44 rear end any stronger than the 9in.??
Thanks for all the replies. I figure the D44 will do alright till i get around to getting another 9in housing. I did go from 3.50( I think)gears on my 9in to 2.71 on the d44. Ill notice that when i get my driveshaft back. Maybe itll be better i could only get up to about 7 mph in 1st with the 3.50s. well ill let ya know
