Problem number....? I lost count.

Hey all,
I got stranded yesterday. Not the first time I've had this problem. Truck will be running fine, then just sounds like it jumped time. But then, after an hour or so, runs fine again. Engine barely runs, backfires on intake side, not all cylinders firing. No engine code. Not specific amount of miles it happens. Not specific amount of time. Not specific temperature. I'm lost. One guy said something about a resistor wire? I've never heard of that and it doesn't seem like the cause.

While I want to believe you, its virtually impossible for the engine to misfire that badly and NOT generate fault codes of some kind. KOEO, KOER and stored codes need to be run/checked. There is so little that is unmonitored by the system. The first checks are the simple ones... electrical connections especially at the coil, ignition module, and distributor would be my starting point if for some reason you still have nothing but code 11 or code 111.

The continuous memory codes, CM, should indicate something. Check, clean, dry and dielectric grease connections where mentioned. Check grounds, battery cable, next to battery to fender, near code reader plug to fender, firewall to engine.

Is your gas old? My Bronco may sit for two weeks without driving so I now add Heet and StaBil at about half the suggested dose.

Oxygen sensors should be replaced at 60-90K miles. It made a huge improvement in my Bronco.

I rechecked the the codes, nothing there. It is problem number ?, because I keep having small problems. The engine light does work. I even disconnected the EGR sensor to verify that it comes on. Gas is not old, I don't drive it to work daily, but I do use it afterwork and on weekends. In fact, it did it again this weekend. Ran great to gas station, Great on the interstate at 75mph. Stopped at the exit ramp, and then it barely ran and was all I could do to get off the road and to a gas station. Couple hours later, started right up and made it home no problem. Thought it sounded like jumped time because not firing on all cylinders and backfires like it sparked at the wrong time. Sounds almost like not getting any gas, but tank was over half full. Filter is new. I've heard mention of Vapor lock, not sure what that is and whether or not that could be the culprit. Could prolly use new o2 sensor, but wouldn't that throw a light?

no these newer trucks dont vapor lock that was on older trucks with carburators and no fuel vapor return line sounds like either fuel or fire done ur tune up lately u need to hook a fuel pressure gauge to it while it is messin up fords also had a wiggle test on there connectors found plenty of bad distrubuter plugs wiggle on the plug up and down while it is running u really need a scan tool hooked to monitor data while driving could be a mass air flow sensor them k&n filters can contaminate the sensor if u have to much oil on them
