Engine Jumping. Need help!
Got a 1992 F-150 XLT, V8 5.0L with 204,000 miles. Just bought the truck from a dealer about a week ago. Ran fine when I test drove it. Felt like the spark plugs were bad but thats about it. After driving it around a bit and kinda getting a feel for it the I noticed the spark plugs being out and the engine shifting extremely hard when accelerating fast. I replaced all the spark plugs and wires. Test drove it and it seemed fine for a little. Then I noticed the engine jumping around 30-40 mph when I am just barely applying gas. It runs great when I am accelerating or not applying gas but when I just stay at 30-40 mph it shifts up and jumps. Basically it feels like when you put a manual transmision into 5th gear and try to go 20 mph like that, only it is a lot rougher. Someone suggested it maybe the fuel pump. I didn't know if it could be a problem with the tranny. Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

I had a situation like that with my wife's van. When you turn off the OD, it goes away. (No OD in the city, it's fine, out on the hiway, with OD on, it's fine.) Seems that the trans tries to 'hunt' for the next gear, and then doesn't want it, so it keep jumping in and out. My auto trans experience is like not a lot, but that is what I went through with a few of them. Let us know...

Let me do some research with the family, I will be back...(Her mother had the same problem. Seems that using OD while in the city wrecks the system.) Also, when you start the vehicle, the OD is automatically set to 'ON'. So, people tend to just 'gas-n-go' and thats rough on the OD when the stop signs\red lites are right when the tranny wants that 'x-tra' gear.
