OK So I am getting ready to tow my race car and trailer about 600 miles through the rockies to an event in 3 weeks and I really want to see if I can track down and anhilate the vibration I am getting. Has been there since I bought the truck and now I am ready to tackle.
I am going to replace the 2 joints on the rear shaft as a preventative measure (cause they are cheap) but something tells me this isn't the issue. I have read everyone elses posts and this is what I plan.
1. remove shaft and replace joints
2. rebalance driveshaft
see where that gets me I am hoping it will make the issue better.
There is little noise other then some "drumming" if I have a bottle of water in the console it shakes like crazy around 65-72 mph if I put it into neutral it still shakes but maybe a bit less.

I have already re-balanced the tires.
Am I on the right track?
Thanks

Check for miss but you say it goes away when put in neutral?????
yeah a specific speed vibration sounds like an out of balance drive shaft or bad u joint. Definitely a good place to start. did you try rotating the tires too? balancing was gonna be my first recommendation but looks like u did that... Consider a Match balancing if driveshaft and u joints don't fix it... are u sure the hubs and front drive shaft are staying unlocked ?
See my post and see if my symptoms match yours. It is titled something to the effect of "out of ideas regarding vibrations". Lots of good information there.
I had a similar vibration - noticeable drone/vibration 65 and up. Replaced the U-joints and no change. It turned out to be the rear drive shaft which a local shop rebalanced. But to be sure I removed the rear drive shaft and drove the truck on the highway in 4x4, I could tell right away the noise/vibration was gone. I suppose it could still have been a pinion bearing, but it was enough to convince me that it was worth taking the DS to the shop and have it balanced.
