Help With 6.9 Starting/Running

1986 350 Non-Turbo 6.9 starts, runs 3 seconds then dies. After long cranking starts and runs all day. Fuel filter new and remains full. Loosened injection line/no fuel. Could Inj pump be losing prime if so why and is there a repair w/o expensive pump replacement? Thank You

You are getting air in the system allowing the fuel to drain back to the tank.

The typical spots for Air Intrusion are:
  • Injector Return Lines
  • Water Separator

A good write up for Injector Return Line Replacement
Injector Return Line Replacement

Water Separator, Either bypass or put a plug in the drain line.

Remember, Air molecules are smaller then Diesel, so just because it's not leaking fuel does not mean there is no air intrusion.

I guess if I would read the Forum name .... I would say!

Welcome to FTE.

You would get better response in one of:
  • 1980 - 1986 F100, F150 And Larger F-Series Trucks
  • Pre-Power Stroke Diesel (7.3L IDI & 6.9L)

-Enjoy

Thank You "FH" (Great Character On Gunsmoke)

"FH" Thanks for the help, on my 6.9. On the rare occasion, it will start and stay running but mostly not. Is there some way of "Priming" the inj pump manually with out breaking a line ie: drill/tap a small hole in pump chamber, non-pressure side and add fuel allowing air to escape through loosed inj line? Also, is there a diagram on line of pumps internals? Thanks Again For The Help As I've Got To Get Her Started TodayCT

You're welcome.

You should only need to bleed at the Filter housing schrader valve.

And like I said, Please post these questions in the appropriate forum, you will get much better response.

-Enjoy
