Need help with transfer case.
First I have to apologize for my absences. Things have been really rough. About two months ago I was laid off from Cessna after twelve years. I also lost my home. Since then me and my brother have been living out of a couple vans. Things are looking up however as my severance check has finally arrived and I am going to be able to full-fill a dream I have had. Me and Cory will be heading for Arizona with in a month and I will start work on what I hope will be the first of many books. I have picked up an old 33' class a motor home at a real good price and we are going to look for a decent trailer for Cory down there.
I have finally figured out how to get a title for my truck. I am planning on putting a new 300 6 in it so we can take it with us. I don't know if anybody remembers back when I bought it but at the time we could not get more than 40 mph with it because it was as if the transfer case was in 4 low yet not sending power to the front. When we brought it to my parents place it was even worse until about 5 miles out. I started getting mad at it and was able to force the shifter into 2 hi while moving. The truck was easily able to get up to 55 mph then. I always say "if at first you don't succeed get mad at it, at least you'll feel better". I don't have a clue as to how to rebuild it and I am not sure where or even if I could buy a new one.
If anyone could help I would be eternally gratefully!
Later,
Carl
You might check simple stuff first. Check that it is full of fluid or even change the old stuff out for new. Then, lube the transfer shifter linkage and the shift rods that slide in and out of the transfer. If it was sitting for a long time, they may be rusty and not able to shift without a lot of effort. After all of that, if it doesn't work, the rebuild may be in order. I haven't done one either, but it would be no worse than a standard transmission. You would probably need access to a press for some stuff or take it to a machine shop.
I will still crawl under there tomorrow to check fluid levels and try to lube everything up good then see if that helps it after I get it tagged. I am a little affraid to mess with it now because I need to take it downtown for it's inspection.
Later,
Carl
