Hey guys, I normally hang out in the 99-03 7.3 section as too thats what I own. My girlfriend has a 2003 v10 with about 76thousand miles on it. Today leaving my house she noticed that the trans seems to be slipping. I get off work go to her house and take it for a drive. seems to be only in OD but it jerks and sounds like it is missing under a load, seems like only in OD but i could be wrong. At idle though it kind of makes a pop noise like a miss, fouled spark plug or coil pack or somthing. (i am a diesel junkie, dont know much about the gassers) Is there a common problem that these trucks have I should know about? Or could anyone please point me in the right direction to fix it, think I will start by replacing spark plugs. If you need anymore info please ask and I will find out. Thanks A Bunch..Kenny Brady
FYI - truck is all stock except k&n intake, use for towing horse trailer, late 03, if it were a diesel it would be a 6.0.
Is the CEL on? If not, take it to a dealer to get the misfire counters read to narrow the problem.
If it is on, just have the codes read. If the code is for the "coil primary or secondary circuit failure" and a "misfire" code replace COP. If it's just a misfire code without a supporting code, change the boots and plugs on all cylinders. Boots can be had the cheapest on ebay ($12 for a set of 10).
Just remember, when changing plugs, use a very light coating of anti-sieze and torque the plugs to 11ft.lbs. No more, no less. If you don't get it right, the plugs can pop out of the head and take the threads with them.
i had coil go bad with no cel light but put my scanner on it just to see if there was anything and had a misfire come up on the scanner, changed the coil and everything was fine.
Since 1999+ Super Duties are over 8500 GVWR they are not required to have a CEL when a misfire happens. Like smithrngr said you need to hook up a scanner a see what cylinder has the misfire.
You just need a scanner that reads pending codes. The PCM stores this info but because it follows ODB I logic doesn't present misfires as CEL. My cheap Actron 9180 reads misfire counters just fine. Used it when I had two dead coils after replacing plugs.
