4x4 system

New to the Ford 4x4 system. Coming from a toyota, (part time 4wheel drive but maybe its part AWD) you could engage it on any pavement surface and drive normally, the manual actually recommended running the 4x4 system every now and then.

However in the Excursion. I engaged 4x4 and then drove a bit. Made a turn at a slow speed <15 mph. A grinding noise and felt like the truck was slowing down. Is this normal behavior on wet pavement? Didn't really here any chirping tires as if it were a locked front diff..

Thanks for your input.

I'd say it is normal it was binding up. You shouldn't run 4x4 unless you are offroad or in snow.

^^^Ditto that. The 4WD system in the Ex is different than an AWD or Part / Full time 4WD system in that it doesn't have a viscous coupler or anything in the driveline to compensate for front / rear torque bias. When it is locked, you have a 50/50 split in power going to each axle. When you turn it on surfaces with a good amount of grip, the front end will bind and tend to feel like it's jumping. It is not for use on dry pavement or that type of surface where there is little or no chance for slippage by the front wheels.
