Fuel Selector Valve?

Hello all! I have a 1990 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat that my brother-in-law gave me and it only runs off the back tank due to the fact that he hard wired it to run off the rear fuel pump. I pulled the bed off today thinking it would be the selector valve, but I can't seem to find it on this truck. I don't see where he took it off and he says he didn't take anything off. Where is the blasted thing? I can see the fuel lines running to the tanks and the wires running to the fuel pumps, but I can follow them all the way to the engine, but they don't go to any fuel selector valve. Now the issue is, if I disconnect the wire that he used to run off the rear fuel pump, the truck won't run. If I use the wire, the truck runs fine, but the front tank will fill with fuel and will over-flow. So I am thinking the fuel selector valve is somewhere, but darned if I can find it. Please help!

Thanks,

Mike

It looks like there were several fuel related recalls associated with your truck.

the fuel selector is actually known as the fuel resorvoir and valve assy. It is located on the inner driver's side frame rail about under the driver'sw seat. The fuel selector switch will turn on either of the 2 low pressure pumps in the side and rear tank, fuel will flow through the resorvoir assy and into the High pressure pump that is located in front of the resorvoir assy. this is the same setup from 1985 unitl they did away with the high pressure pump in about 1993.+

Don't go crazy looking for the valve. 1990 was the first year for the high pressure in-tank pumps, which eliminated the external switching valve. The switching mechanism is located within each tank, and open or close depending on which fuel pump is running. If fuel is transferring from one tank to the other, replace the fuel delivery module in the tank where the fuel is going.

tanks switch on a 90 from the switch in the dash. you have 2 bad fuel pumps. while you have the bed off is a good time to replace them.there is a recall on the fuel transfer to the other tank. ford instaled a check valve. the reason it's doing that, your fuel pump is going bad. reason other tank not working, fuel pump already went bad. my 90 has been through 1 of each {front & back} in 35,000 miles. ithink it's a time thing, not a mileage thing

ok. I found out that it was not switching to either tanks and not pumpming because the switch was bad. I pulled the switch out of the dash, took it apart, cleaned it out and fixed it up and put it back in and it is working ok now. Now the only other problem is the fuel in the front tank. Can I just get an external check valve and put it in-line at the front tank somewhere? Which line could/should I put it on?

Thanks!
Mike

that was a recall from ford, check the recall section, there should be a ford part #. it goes in the return line right at the tank. you need 1 for both tanks, now would be a good time to put them in since your bed is off

The check valve should go on the pressure send line. Fuel should never come out of the tank through the return line, so a check valve there will not serve any purpose.

Am I interpreting this incorrectly, or did this expire in 2002?

ok. Thanks Dusty, so I should be able to contact Ford and get the check valves then. Now at the expense of sounding ingorant. how do you determine which line is the return line and which is the send line without pulling the pump?

ok, I called Ford and the parts guy said they can't do anything without the part number for the check valve. Do any of you guys know what that part number is or where I can find it since Ford apparently doesn't know what their own part numbers are?

I called another Ford dealer and they said they need the actual recall number in order to look up the part number for the check valves. Any idea where to get that?

Thanks Number, but after some research, my truck doesn't actually use a selector valve, so I need a check valve in the fuel line or new fuel pump/fuel delivery module.
