Wiper Kits

I'm looking at the options for windscreen wipers at the moment - my truck has nothing at all currently.

If anyone can share good/bad experiences, ease of installation, fit, installed pics etc of any kits available that would be very helpful.

I got my kit from Carpenters and it was easy to install. I definately had to have electric wipers with 2 instead of one. I guess whoever bought this truck could not see the extra 8 or so dollars for the optional second wiper.

I have not purchased the setup yet but I am planning on going with the SPW cable setup on my F-1. If you want AC I believe that there will be a problem using aftermarket setup in mytbtruck's post above. The popular setup takes a lot of underdash space.

I stayed with the single wiper kit from sac vintage ford, and even if it cost an additional 8 bucks, I don't plan on running in the rain anyway.......have yet to do install.

I have already installed the a/c and the only problem was the defrost duct fittings. I changed the angle on them by cutting them in half and reversing the bottom half and used pvc glue to put them together. After that they cleared everything without a problem. I will get a picture under the dash when I finish with it. I need to get one more piece of flexible duct to hook up the defrosters.

I am surprised that you didn't have more difficulty. With my heat/AC setup If I used the wiper kit that you used I would have had to lose all of the glovebox. I did not buy one of the popular AC setups and assembled my own with flea market parts. Pix in my gallery should demonstrate what I am referring to. Whose AC did you buy?

Rain X

My old truck has pneumatic wipers, so I rely on Rain X. As long as I keep it fresh, I do not worry about getting caught in a storm. I wouldn't even turn on the wipers except for the comic value of seeing them slowly struggle to clear the windscreen.

Newport Engineering in my 53. Exact replacement for original vacum. The fifth one of theirs I have used, never had a problem. Joe

I Used Hot Rod Air a/c and I did lose most of the glove box. I am planning on mounting a radio/cd player in the glove box so it is not a problem. I think all the a/c units take out most of the glove box, don't know this for sure though. I tried to in put a glove box from Carpenters and did not like the way it fit so I decided to forget about a glove box.

I used the SPW kit and it is very adaptable. I mounted the motor in the drivers kickpanel. It works great, if I ever do need it I'll have it. I don't have any wiper blades installed for local cruising.

I also used the Newport Engineering system on my 51 - which had the Extra Cab electric wipers originally. I got it with the delay wiper switch and they work fantastic.

Here is the link to Newport Engineering if you want to window shop a bit:

Wiipers for my windscreen..........

Well, with my '53, I changed the vacuum wipers to electric by getting a 6V electric setup, (optional on 53-55s) then using a 12V motor which only required making up a new output arm from the 6V and 12V arms. I use an aftermarket intermittent wiper control with it. I am not going to use any A/C in my truck that would go under the dash or I would have to use different wipers and lose the glove compartment. Since I will not give up the cowl vent or the wind wings or the glove box, I am thinking that I will go without A/C entirely. I tried an old fashioned window cooler last summer and it worked outstandingly well. (I am not in a humid climate). If I do go with A/C, it will be similar to the Cherokee/Wagoneer setups below the dash. As far as a radio goes, it is a AM/FM/CD combo mounted up high in a console fashion. Speakers are in the doors. I have a vacuum wiper set for 53-55 and one for a 56 less the 12V motor very cheap. (See the classifieds)

Regards,

Alan

+3 on Newport Engineering. Fortunately my '50 had a dual wiper system.
