Possible worn bearings, bad lifter. Flushing the engine might have dislodged too much sludge. Have you checked your pressure w/a mech gauge? Cold and hot.

Oil filter is draining back, causing a dry start.

Oil filters have a valve inside to keep this from happening. It's called a drainback valve. Replace the oil filter and see if it goes away. If you replace the oil filter and the problem still exists, it's possible the oil pump is losing its prime while the truck is shut off.

By the way, I think engine flushes are a bad idea. Running that stuff through a 30 year old motor dislodges the sludge that very well may be holding it together. Your story is a perfect example. It's a completely pointless thing to do. If the flush doesn't cause any problems, you don't see anything different. If the flush causes problems, you get stories like this. Why do something that, at best, gets you to where you were in the first place? I digress...

Yup. Fram oil filters are known for this. Avoid Fram oil filters and change it out for something better.

Would that logic hold true for tranny flushes too?

It depends. If the transmission has been serviced at the recommended intervals throughout its life, then continued ATF service is usually recommended. However, people who flush a transmission that has had the original fluid for 30 years tend to develop problems after the flush. There are mixed results. If the transmission is in healthy condition and still using the original fluid, new fluid probably won't cause a problem. However, if the transmission is starting to slip, sometimes the problem is worse after a fluid replacement. I can't say there is a definitive rhyme or reason; I've seen both happen.

A transmission is different because while the inside is subject to intense heat and pressure, you don't have several different fluids that can mix when a seal starts to leak, and you don't have blow-by circulating internally that tends to gunk things up.

Fram products=junk

Steps to go by when flushing a tranny.

a) Have tranny flushed.

2) Drive for a couple weeks/months.

d) park truck when tranny goes to hell.

4) purchase new tranny/have tranny rebuilt.

e) learn your lesson don't flush the new one.

Granted NOT EVERY flushed trans will fail, but as stated above, the odds especially in an OLDER vehicle the odds are Stacked against you!! LEAVE IT BE!

I would agree. The chance a tranny or engine 'flush' will miraculously cure whatever problem you are having is slim to none.

OT, but I don't think all Fram products are junk. I've used them for over 16 yrs and have never had a problem with them filtering. I've had cleaner internals than those using Wix. Regular maintence is the key, it doesn't matter how expensive or "good" of a filter you buy if you don't change the oil. Many of the air filters have at times been identical to the ones I've gotten from NAPA.
