Awhile back, I was having problems with Spark Knock on my 97 F259 351. I tried EVERYTHING to fix the problem, and didnt even have any codes but still had the clatter. Well I figured I would just have to live with paying for the Super Unleaded to stop the clattering. Well I one day I put in Shell Regular Gas (Nitrogen Enriched) I dont know what that means, But I can run Regular gas from Shell in my truck and no Clatter and a little better milage. Well it goes alittle farther.
I filled my wifes 05 EXPY 5.4 with the same gas she always used and drove to Orange Tx, getting about 13.5 mpgs, thats what it consistently ran. On the way back, we had to fill up again ( Its about a 4 hour trip) anyway, we filled it up with Shell and the gas mpg's increased to 15.7, that was about 2 weeks ago. Usually after a week of in town driving, it drops a little. Well after 2 weeks of in town driving, it is still getting a consistent 15.6 mpg. Now I ONLY use SHELL gas.
F259? When did Ford make those lol? Just screwing around . Anyway thanks for the info. I like the Shell station in my area cause it's generally cheaper.
Any chance the jump in mileage was due to a different formulation of gas? In New Jersey, they require a different formulation in the winter for reasons of pollution control. This formulation cuts mileage in most of my cars by about 10% (hows that for cutting down pollution - burn more gas)! Same formulation change could be true for metropolitan vs. rural areas.
Around me, at about the time they are changing over from winter blend to summer blend, it's a crap shoot whether you'll get the winter or the summer when you fill up. Of course, you'll know pretty quickly if you keep an eye on your mileage.
I've typically always used either Sunoco or BP gasoline. I have to stop for gas on my way into work tomorrow morning. I pass a Shell station. After reading this post, I think I'll stop in and try their gas this time around.
I think I just might have to try it for the extra $.o3 a gal. Im getting a measly 15.4 mpg combo (city/hwy) now. Thats with 210k on it and unknown history as its a repo I just bought it 2wks ago.
Well we took our trip to Dallas, Then to Canton (TX), Then back home and the milage went up to 16.5. now that hse has been home and the wife drives it back and forth to work again, it went down to 16.2. I'm sold on it, thats all I will run in my 97 250 and mu Harley Davidson as well
The chemistry escapes me. Nitrogen in liquid form is the same stuff used to freeze off warts and turn bananas hard enough to hammer nails in a 2x4. Otherwise, its a gas. How they get it into gasoline is a mystery. Must be complexed with something else is all I can figure.

Perhaps it was more uphill going there and more downhill coming back, or you had the wind at your back on the return trip.
I'm not trying to doubt your results, but when I read things like this I have a habit of looking for variables that effect the outcome.
