My 4 wheel drive works intermittently. Sometimes when I push the 4x4 button, it engages, sometimes (more often) not. I was wondering if my auto hubs could be causing this problem, or if it is truly the 4 wheel drive actuator motor on the transfer case? Any comments would be appreciated!
To know whether it is the hubs or the transfer case, you need to do a little more troubleshooting. When you push the button, does the front drivehaft engage? What kind of vehicle is it/ What type of autohub does it use? The first thing I'd do is get four wheels off the ground, push the button and see what happens.
I've had a few problems over the years with my 88 Ranger.
The 1st time it didn't engage I tapped on the motor that mounts to the transfer case and it worked and replacing the motor cured that problem.
The next time the front hubs didn't engage and I ended up replacing both outer hubs.
The last time it acted like the hubs again but it ended up being a washer with a broken locking tab by the front wheel bearings.
Hope this gives you a couple of things to look for.
